Permission Piece

Daily ink drawing inspired by lava flow of Iceland’s erupting volcano (detail)

What is the biggest thing you ever thought you could do – or never do? I’ve never skydived or bungie jumped, I’m not sure whether I really want to. But I am now contemplating  a helicopter flight to see the active volcano Fagradalsfjall in Iceland.

The idea of all that powerful nature, fire and lava pouring out of the mountain, is so exciting. The volcano has been in a constant state of eruption since March this year. Even though it is in a “quiet phase” lately, maps of the area are constantly being updated to reflect the lava flow which continues to change the landscape in the Geldingadalir eruption area.

The colours are seductive, with all the elements of a traditional fairy tale, complete with fire breathing dragon awake and wreaking havoc on the surrounding landscape. Thankfully it does not need to be appeased by human sacrifice. It has however, boosted tourism in Iceland with people flocking to witness this sight even bringing their family and friends for a festive picnic outing.

Whether it is still active by the time I get back to Iceland in April 2022 is another story. I have given myself permission to take a helicopter ride if it is, something even a year ago I wouldn’t have contemplated. Why? Because a year ago I didn’t think I was deserving of such good fortune.

To actually say you are worth every penny you spend on yourself and invest in yourself is a big permission piece. What I have discovered is that the more I value myself and my worthiness, the more I allow myself to experience the full potential of all I can be and do and have. This then give permission to others to do the same.

As I invest in myself with mentoring and artist residencies, I can inspire others to see the possibilities that are available when you think outside of your comfort zone. It is scary at first to think of yourself as a larger version of yourself, someone with a divine purpose whose journey of self discovery allows others to undertake their own journey as well.

Believing the world is a wonderful place means we will do everything in our power to keep it wonderful, to preserve its forests and support the efforts of those protecting them from mining and deforestation. It means we will support efforts to keep our oceans and beaches plastic free, even if it is only picking up the rubbish on our local beaches.

To experience the awe in nature, to be struck by awe and beauty, then to realise we are a small speck in the giant planetary scheme of thing is very humbling. Yet to also be aware that we each have power to bring joy to ourselves and those around us – that too is awesome. It starts with that permission slip we give ourselves. Yes do it. Action has power and energy to change lives. Starting with your own today.
