Paper: All Stitched Up is a contemporary view of papermaking and paper art by members of Papermakers and Artists Qld (PAQ), showcasing the experience and diversity of each artist’s practice. The exhibition focuses on works on paper where stitching is an integral element of the visual design and includes sculptural works and artist books.
Stitched Up is a multilayered narrative about the past as a repository of personal, social and environmental stories. The stories of my mothers, grandmother’s and great aunt’s domestic lives are stitched onto handmade paper created from the hessian sandbags used to protect our home from the floods of February 2022.
The two artworks (below) were started at the BigCi artist residency in the Blue Mountains, responding to the 2019 bushfires. They were completed with the addition of argyrotype prints made in Scotland in 2022 relating to nature as a regenerative force. Stitched together they become narratives of resilience and hope spanning two countries. Stitches become sutures healing the earth.
