Stones
“Seen in deep time, stone folds as strata, gouts as lava, floats as plates, shifts as shingle.” ~ Robert MacFarlane
Neolithic stones hold stories of human existence over millennia. Mountains animate a landscape, stones in dwellings or gardens are narratives of human occupation and endeavour.
Stone walls and flagstones inspired by my residency in Oatlands, Tasmania 2024.
Stone Stories
In 2022 I received funding for a geo-narrative project Stone Stories conducted over two residencies in Scotland & Iceland.
This project was about the earth as an animate entity. From ancient stone circles and abandoned houses in the Outer Hebrides to the stones in the fjords in Stöðvarfjörður, Iceland; stones hold the stories of time and place.
This project was supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
In Scotland I photographed abandoned houses which I turned into argyrotype prints. In Iceland I created cyanotypes using the stones themselves.
In Stöðvarfjörður, East Iceland the town people collected stones to place in their garden as ornaments and sentinel spirits. These became the inspiration for many of the artworks I created during May 2022.
