Today is Mother’s Day and I think of all the mothering we do and need to do on a personal and planetary level. Nurturing to me is about holding the light, being a lighthouse, a storehouse and amplifier of vibrational goodness to send out into the world.

I am reminded of a song we used to sing in Sunday school when I was a kid. I’m going to let it shine. It’s  a song about not hiding your light under a bushel. It has remained locked away in my storehouse brain until I started thinking of lighthouses.

I then remembered this little watercolour I did to try and bring my dreams of living at the beach into a reality. At the time we lived in the Victorian high country, far from the beach. We had British Alpine milking goats and for some reason I used that quirky goat as my personal motif. She was at the beach on the headland, waiting for me. Of course when we did finally move to the beach we had to sell the goats, which nearly broke my heart.

I wanted to move somewhere close to a lighthouse. Byron Bay was out of the question. Yamba came close but it was too far from everything. We ended up moving near the Queensland border with the closest lighthouse at Fingal. It’s not quite the same as the majesty of Byron’s lighthouse, but lighthouses, like people come in all shapes and sizes. It is the light that they shine which is important.

I think of this light as a metaphor for connection, across the seas and lands. Having an online business is a bit like that. Shining a light from an online platform to inspire others to not hide their creative lights under the bushels. Being a lighthouse means standing firm in your message, sometimes out on a rocky headland with waves crashing all around. You need to be that lighthouse keeper, someone to tend the light rain, hail or shine.

I used to love the story of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch about the lighthouse keeper, his wife and their scaredy cat Hamish who couldn’t scare the seagulls away from stealing Mr Grimley’s lunchtime sandwiches. All these stories I am drawn to, and this passion leads me into thoughts of light and darkness.

My favourite stories are of the battles between light and darkness. The empowerment of holding the light for others, of finding the crack in the darkness where the light can shine through. To be the light is to be a lighthouse. Connecting people through inspiration and empowerment. Be the light for someone today of all days. We all need a little lightness of being and nurturing comfort.
